and the MUCEM is home to one of the four boutiques
of the Master Soapmaker's Unicorn Soapery
Serge Bruna and his wife Laurence.
This boutique of the Savonnerie de la Licorne is located at the foot of the superb Fort Saint-Jean, which owes its name to the commandery of the Hospitallers of Saint John of Jerusalem established on this spur towards the end of the 12th century.
In the middle of the 15th century, King René built the powerful square tower to guard the harbour channel.
The construction of the fort, required by Louis XIV, was carried out between 1668 and 1671 by the Chevalier de Clerville. Once home to the Department of Underwater and Subaquatic Archaeological Research, Fort Saint-Jean has been home to the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations (MuCEM) since 2013.
