The historic district of Marseille on the vieux-port next to the mairie
(town hall) and facing the hilltop basilica of Notre Dame de la Garde
is the location of one of Savonnerie de la Licorne’s four shops,
established by master sopamaker Serge Bruna and his wife Laurence.
This Savonnerie de la Licorne shop is located in the heart of the famous “Pouillon” buildings arcades, a listed historical monument and a 20th century World Heritage site. In January 1943 under the German occupation, much of the district around the Town Hall was totally destroyed and left in ruins.
After the Liberation, a competition was launched for the collosal reconstruction of the area. The entry of architect Fernand Pouillon, who was very committed to the project, won the day with his innovative design involving large even, blocks of buildings, built in the white stone of Pont du Gard.
At the front of the massive raised blocks, he created at street level the seductive arcades. Come to this shop to discover genuine Marseille Soap products, all made in the workshop of Savonnerie de la Licorne based on Marseille’s Cours Julien, as well as a selection of appealing local artisan products.
